Window Cleaning
April 02, 2010The sun is back. It is time to clean your windows so you can see it. We had a very tough winter here on the Rockland County NY, and Bergen County NJ border. Between blizzards and weeks of rain everyones windows are dull and spotted. The biggest question I get asked is "how do I get them looking good again?"
Lets start at the beginning, how did they get this dirty to begin with? The answer is that the rain and snow washed dirt off of the house on to them, and the wind blew dust around and because the window was wet, or because of static electricity the dirt stuck to the glass.
Now we need to remove it. Windex is terrible, it streaks, and doesn't do a great job. Zep is better if you must use a spray. We use high tech professional soaps, but dish detergent works well. You should always use a cloth to clean and dry the glass, paper towels leave dust and paper particles behind. We use surgical towels that don't leave lint, you can buy them online or try an automotive store. Newspaper works well if you have no choice.
If the widows are really bad you may want to hose them off first to get the real heavy stuff off. Once that is complete spray a liberal amount of your soap solution of choice, and use a damp towel or a sponge to scrub the glass a bit to loosen the dirt. Then using a clean, dry towel wipe the glass clean, making sure to get the edges and the top so water doesn't run down after you have finished. Pay extra attention to the corners they are often missed. This should have the window looking great.
